TACKLE THE CHALLENGE!

Semester Exam: Thursday
Face-ing Math: Due on Thursday
Semester Exam Review: Optional 80 Question Review
Semester Exam will count as one of four major grades this grading period. Please have all corrections in by WEDNESDAY Dec. 16th so they can be put in the gradebook before Friday.
11/30 - 12/17
We are kicking off these next three weeks with writing and determining the rule to Arithmetic Sequences as they relate to linear non-proportional relationships. Later in this unit we will write and graph linear equations in slope-intercept form. We will spend some time solving multi-step equations and two-step inequalities. We will have a Unit 1 -4 Stations Review on Wednesday December 16th and our Semester Exam will be on December 17th. The Semester Exam will count as a major grade for this grading period. This will also serve as benchmark data, therefore there will not be a retake or proof day. Please let me know if you have any questions. Please help me remind your child to pick up the extra credit and to take some time to work on corrections.

This week is kind of a crazy schedule between Benchmark Testing and Thanksgiving Lunch. All 6th Grade GT Math students will report to the cafeteria on Monday morning where we will hold class as the rest of the school takes benchmarks. 6th grade GT Math students will NOT take a fall benchmark as they will be taking a semester exam in December. Please join us on Tuesday for Thanksgiving lunch. Wednesday is early release and ALL students will take their reading benchmark on Wednesday. We return to a normal schedule on Thursday! There will be no before or after school tutoring this week.
11/2
We are wrapping up our Proportionality in Geometry Project this week. The project will be due at the end of class on Tuesday. On Wednesday we are starting our Probability Unit! We are starting off with understanding sample spaces and simple events. We will close out Unit 3 before we leave for Thanksgiving Break. I highly encourage all of your students to plan on being here the Friday before the break as that will serve as our Unit 3 Proof Day. I am hoping that this enough time for all of you to make arrangements.
10/19
Proportionality: Similar Figures and Triangle Similarity Theorems. Friday Rewind #6. I will be out this week, so there will be no tutoring before or after school. If your student is struggling with any of the concepts, I encourage them to go to Homework Club or ask me when I return. I thank you in advance for your understanding as I take care of my family; I will get grades in and feedback out to the students asap. We will review these concepts before we move on to our Proportionality in Geometry Project.
10/13
Percents are it this week! We are determining percent change (increase or decrease) along with a few applications of percents: discount, markup, and tax. Next week we will explore simple interest before we move to similar figures. Students are coming home with the Face-ing Math that will be extra credit on their 1st Grading Period Summative Assessment (FRIDAY). The extra credit will be due on Friday. This major grade will roll over to the 2nd grading period to allow time for a reassessment opportunity if necessary. The last grade for this grading period will be 1st Grading Period Stations- Thursday. ALL CORRECTIONS ARE DUE ON THURSDAY.
10/5
We are still delving into proportionality and linear proportional relationships in the form y=kx. This week students will be working on their linear proportionality projects. The project will be assigned in class on Monday and will be due at the end of class on Wednesday. The project is a choice board, so they can choose which 3 areas to demonstrate their strengths in understanding linear proportional relationships. Students will have some class time on Monday to begin brainstorming their project; they will have the majority of class on Tuesday to work on their project and check in with me; they will have the entire class period on Wednesday to put their final touches on their project and turn in. Your child should not need to complete their project at home. If they are working on it extensively at home, chances are that they did not use their class time wisely. On Thursday we will cover how to use proportions to convert between measurement systems. On Friday, students will take Rewind #5. Just a reminder: The reassessment window for Unit 1 will close on 10/9/15.
9/28
We are starting our PROPORTIONALITY unit this week and I am beyond excited! We are exploring unit rates and ratios as well as constant rates of change. We will have Rewind #4 on Friday.
Students are reflecting on their Unit 1 Test on Monday. If your child had not yet mastered the material as of Friday, please help me encourage him/her to make an appointment to reassess. We are a mastery learning school, so that means that your child has an opportunity to show what s/he now knows after a major grade. Students will need to make a lunch appointment or a Thursday afternoon appointment to come to my room and reassess. The reassessment will include analyzing and describing his/her mistake on each question missed AND then describing in detail what the correct answer is and why. They will get one session to show what they now know. This is open to EVERYONE but is mandatory for any child with a grade below 70. The reassessment window for Unit 1 will close on 10/9/15.
Just as a reminder, any minor grade below an 80 can be corrected and returned for a maximum grade of 80.
Tutoring is starting this week. Tuesdays are structured, invitation only tutoring sessions. The morning session is from 7:15 - 7:35. The afternoon session is from 3:00 - 3:30. Thursdays are come-and-go. I will be available from 3:00 to 3:30. Tutoring pick up is on the north (gym) side of the building.
9/21
We will spend one more day practicing operations with rational numbers before introducing approximating irrational numbers to the nearest hundredth. We will use our knowledge of rational and irrational numbers to compare real numbers. Before our UNIT 1 TEST on FRIDAY, we will have a UNIT 1 STATIONS practice day on Thursday. This will be a opportunity to practice skills individually and with peers; this is also a great opportunity to ask any remaining questions. After the test students will have an extra credit opportunity. The extra credit is worth up to 5 points on their major grade. The extra credit is due on Monday at the beginning of class. This extra credit opportunity is completely optional but the deadline is firm.
Don't forget about Curriculum Night this Tuesday from 6 - 730, Hope to see you all there!
Tutoring will begin the week of September 28th. I will send out more details shortly.
9/14
We are reflecting on Rewind # 2. Students are either working towards or have met performing operations with integers fluently, adding and subtracting rational numbers with fluency, and classifying real numbers. This week's rewind will include solving problems using rational number operations as well as spiraling back through classifying real numbers.
Just as a reminder, any minor grade can be corrected to demonstrate mastery and a new grade of up to an 80 will replace previous grade.
9/8
We are reflecting on Rewind # 1. Students are working towards or have met performing operations with integers fluently, properties of real numbers, and classifying real numbers. This week we are working towards adding and subtracting rational numbers fluently. This week's rewind will include operations with integers as well as adding and subtracting rational numbers and classifying real numbers.
8/31
On Mondays we reflect. On Fridays we rewind. The kids are reflecting on their Friday Rewind from last week. The purpose of the reflection is for the kids to know exactly where they are in their learning - mastered, working towards, or not yet met. The rewind we had last week was informal but allowed us to begin our reflection process. This is the only rewind that will not be a grade in PowerSchool. I do encourage you to look at the rewind and reflection with your child in order to better understand the process. Please be sure to check out the calendar section for what we are doing each day and when our major grades will be.
